The indications are those of general oral corticosteroid therapy when the parenteral route is necessary due to inability to take oral medication (vomiting, gastric aspiration, altered mental status).
- Infectious diseases: mainly for certain cases of septic thrombophlebitis, severe typhoid fever (especially with confusion, shock, and coma), tuberculosis in addition to specific etiological treatment, acute stridulus laryngitis in children.
- Oncology: palliative treatment of leukemias and lymphomas, multiple myeloma, many cancers, and as antiemetic treatment during chemotherapy, bone metastasis with hypercalcemia.
- Nephrology: certain glomerulonephritis and nephrotic syndromes, collagen diseases and connective tissue disorders.
- Allergology: severe allergic conditions, angioedema, anaphylactic shock.
- Endocrinology: paraneoplastic hypercalcemia.
- Hematology: idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (autoimmune), only by IV route.
- Neurology: cerebral edema, tumoral or traumatic, palliative treatment of tumors of Graves’ disease.
- ENT: laryngeal edema, suffocating laryngitis, epiglottitis, dyspnea.
- Pulmonology: status asthmaticus.
- Organ transplantation .
