Infectiology is a medical clinical discipline specializing in the management of infectious and tropical diseases in their individual and collective dimensions.
Its aim is to prevent and treat infections. These can be of different kinds:
- Nosocomial infections.
- Bacterial diseases.
- Viral diseases.
- Parasitic diseases.
The main purpose of an infectiologist is to diagnose the source of the infection.
It can be of several types as we have seen: bacteriological, viral... To carry out its action and identify the pathogenic agent, the infectiologist uses the following tests:
- Gram staining.
- Blood culture.
- Serological tests.
- Genotyping.
- Polymerase chain reaction.
In the 1980s, the number of serious diseases began to multiply: AIDS, coronavirus, Legionnaires' disease, zoonoses, avian virus... Tropical diseases, which were originally responsible for the development of the medical discipline of infectiology, are also making a comeback.
In this context, infectiologists become major players in state health policies. They are also interested in hospital management and support their colleagues in other fields. During the Covid-19 crisis, infectiology was decisive in decision-making at the national level.
