OPHTHALMOLOGY
Ophthalmology is a surgical specialty that deals with the structure and function of the eye, as well as the diseases and abnormalities that affect them.
Note that some ophthalmologists may specialize in sub-specialties, such as:
- Cataract surgery.
- Refractive surgery.
- Retinal diseases.
- Glaucoma.
The ophthalmologist deals with numerous conditions, including :
- Vision defects such as myopia.
- Presbyopia.
- Hyperopia or astigmatism.
- Retinal detachment, cataracts.
- Age-related macular degeneration (AMD).
- Glaucoma or diabetic retinopathy.
It should be noted that it is the ophthalmologist who prescribes appropriate corrective lenses based on the patient's condition.
Some diseases are recognized as having an impact on the integrity and function of the eye. These include :
- Diabetes.
- High blood pressure.
- Certain rheumatoid diseases.
- Certain infectious diseases.
- Neurological disorders.
